I began my Ph.D. journey in 2001 at the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Maastricht. My research focused on investigating the sedating and stimulating effects of antihistamines, with a particular emphasis on their impact on driving and cognitive performance. Following the completion of my Ph.D., I was a post-doctoral researcher at the same university. During this time, my research centered around exploring the cognitive effects of high doses of cannabis in both occasional and daily cannabis users, utilizing Event-Related Potentials. Since 2007, I have been working as an assistant professor at Maastricht University. My focus has revolved around studying the effects of medicinal drugs and drugs of abuse on driving performance, cognition, and subjective experiences. I have co-supervised several Ph.D. students within our research team, collaborating on projects involving psychedelics and novel psychoactive substances. Recently, I concluded a series of groundbreaking first-in-man studies involving a synthetic cannabinoid identified in herbal smoking mixtures like Spice.
